An impressive underground fortress
Fort Eben-Emael is much more than just a museum. Behind its unassuming entrance lies a vast military complex with kilometers of corridors, underground living quarters, bunkers, and artillery turrets. During your visit, you’ll discover how young soldiers lived here and how the fort was designed to defend the Belgian border.
On May 10, 1940, the fort became the scene of an unprecedented military operation. German soldiers landed on the roof of the complex in gliders. The attack marked the beginning of World War II in Belgium and changed military history forever.
History That Comes Close to Home
Inside the fort, you can visit the underground barracks, the infirmary, the command post, and the museum, which features an original glider. The long hallways and spacious rooms give you a sense of just how large the complex really is.
