A Special Crossing in the Borderlands
On the border between Flanders and Wallonia, a hiking experience awaits that you won’t soon forget. The Caestert Passerelle connects two marl cliffs above the Albert Canal. As you cross, you’ll look out over the water and the rugged landscape of the Caestert Plateau from a height of about fifty meters.
The bridge is part of a landscape that has been shaped over the centuries by nature and marl quarrying. Sunken roads, steep cliffs, old quarries, and limestone houses give this region its very own character.
A brisk walk full of variety
From the Vroenhoven Bridge, a signposted walking trail of about 17 kilometers leads to the Passerelle. Along the way, you’ll discover Kanne, the Cannerbos, Château Neercanne, the Caestert Plateau, and the area around Fort Eben-Emael, among other sights.
Kanne is a great place to stop along the way. Take your time: this isn’t a quick hike to check off your list, but a day trip that combines nature, heritage, and scenic views.

There is an admission fee for the crossing, and the number of visitors per day is limited. Therefore, please make a reservation in advance. The official route starts at the Vroenhoven Bridge, Maastrichtersteenweg 212. Check Visit Riemst for current accessibility information and tickets. Wear sturdy hiking shoes and bring plenty of water.
